He holds a snake in his hands over his head and has a claw stepping on Nagakanya.
Garuda, representing birth and heaven, is the enemy of all snakes. In many stories, Garuda symbolizes the virtue of knowledge, power, bravery, loyalty, and discipline.
Garuda traditionally has the torso and arms of a man and the wings, head, beak and talons of an eagle or vulture. Garuda is also known as the “king of the birds” (Khagesvara) and “the devourer” (Nagantaka). The latter name is in reference to his role as the enemy of all snakes which are symbolic of death and the underworld. In contrast, Garuda represents birth and heaven; he is also associated with the sun and fire.
A talisman of Garuda is used to protect people from poison. Symbols of Garuda are believed to protect people from evil and danger. He drives away negative spirits, black magic, evil spells, and poisons.
